INDIA KITCHEN, MCKINNEY, TX Award Winner: 2021 ASID Dallas Design Ovation, Commercial/Hospitality - 2nd Place

The objective of the design was to create a relaxing environment that transports one to a different world, full of new experiences - a perfect setting for trying new food. The concept was further showcased through use of raw, natural material and custom artwork.

The main inspiration for the design was derived from Warli art form, which is centered around elements of nature. Warli artist commonly use their clay huts as backdrop for their paintings done in white, which typically depict their way of life - sowing, harvesting, hunting, dancing etc. The goal was to reflect the simple Warli way of life in a rustic but elegant and modern way. The color palette of terra-cotta and white was directly derived from Warli colors, however the way they were used was transformed. The inherited space distribution was not appealing, hence to bind it together the terra-cotta color was used from above the counter and the whole of ceiling with white color on the lower part forming backdrop for terra-cotta accents. Clay, the main material used in Warli huts was reflected in design through use of clay breeze blocks (referred to as “Jali” also commonly found in the region). These clay breeze blocks were framed at various locations in the restaurant to add enough embellishment without being too ornate just like the Warli way.  Additionally, the light filtering through the backlit clay blocks of the counter added to the tranquil atmosphere/ambience.

Wood trim was used to add subtle texture to walls while forming frames at eye level to depict the star of the design, the Warli Art,  with focus placed on food related artwork. The art done in terra-cotta color was extended to highlight the counter, to add detail on tables, pendant lights and even on the entry floor as a welcome symbol. The other material used in the design of this restaurant were also very intentional such as wicker lights, wood tone tables, leather granite countertop, clay pendant light, concrete like tile to further support the distinctive style derived in the restaurant.
